Windows 10 Update 20H2 is here
Posted - Sunday, November 15, 2020

Microsoft has released a new update for Windows to dubbed 20H2 (or Version 2009). For most users, this won't be particularly noteworthy, other than a few usability and feature changes that we will get into later in the blog.

For some there are a few bugs, mostly around Drivers. The information made available by Microsoft includes:

  • Errors or issues during or after updating devices with certain Conexant audio drivers -- Conexant or Synaptics audio drivers might receive a stop error with a blue screen
  • Errors or issues during or after updating devices with Conexant ISST audio drivers -- Devices with affected Conexant ISST audio drivers might receive an error or have issues with Windows 10 2004
  • Issues when using Microsoft IME for Japanese or Chinese languages

It isn't surprising that Microsoft have such a brief list really, as this newest feature update in mostly just a polished version of the previous (version 20H1) release. For more information about updated known issues you can check out  Microsoft's Release information here

If you haven't received the update yet, it's due to Microsoft throttling the release. This is an attempt to reduce the impact of any compatibility problems hitting everyone at the same time. So, if you haven't received the update yet, it's most likely due to this staggered schedule.

New Features

In this version of Windows, the classic “System” page in the Control Panel has been removed. When you try to open it, you’ll be taken to the About page in the new Settings app.

All the information found in the Settings pane in Control Panel is available in the Settings app, so this isn't really an issue for normal use. the page also contains buttons for some more advanced features like the Device Manager or to get to BitLocker settings.

The new Edge is now browser is not built into windows. this isn't really a substantial change, but worth mentioning. You still be able to use whichever is your preferred browser as usual.

There is now a new theme for the start menu so that it's more in-line with the aesthetics of the rest of your settings, such as Dark-mode.

Along with these features, there are a bunch of minor changes. You can find a complete list here.
